Valeria TRIPOLI
Valeria was born in Messina in 1987. He studied languages since high school and graduated in oriental languages, specialising in Arabic language and literature at the University of Rome La Sapienza. He won several scholarships to study Arabic in Egypt and worked as an interpreter. He currently works as manager of the Eastwest NEWSSTAND on the Lungotevere dei Mellini.
Guillermo MALASQUEZ
Guillermo was born in Lima, Perù, in 1976. He studied at the University of San Marco at the Faculty of Physical Education with specialization in swimming for special children.
Since 2000 he has worked in Rome at the Mondadori bookshop as a clerk, warehouse manager and organizational collaborator. He currently works as manager of the Eastwest kiosk on the Lungotevere Dei Mellini.
AN IMPORTANT STORY
During the Second World War, the fighter partisan Tosca Casadio, of the Gap di Borgo, a few steps from San Pietro, had distinguished herself in bravely countering the roundups against the Jewish community of the Prati and Trionfale area, probably offering a shelter to the same Togliatti. At the end of the war, the two leaders of the republican left, Pietro Nenni and Palmiro Togliatti, decided to do their best to ensure that Casadio obtained a license to sell newspapers. The newsstand, an elegant and vaguely rationalist structure, was thus inaugurated in 1948, in front of the Gran Caffè Esperia in Ruschena, which soon became one of the places of the dolce vita, in an almost bathing area, thanks to the pontoon on the Tiber river of Ciriola.
EASTWEST NEWSSTAND
Tosca was one of the founders of the journalists’ union and the protagonist of a well-known chronicle of the time: the slap in the face of the Mayor Rebecchini (still the longest-standing Mayor at the Campidoglio since the post-war period), guilty of having torn the manifesto of the exhibition of L’Unità and Rinascita, outraging the memory of the Resistance. After moving to via Cavallini for the construction of the underground passage in 1960, the kiosk was returned to its original position by the heirs. 70 years after its birth, the newsstand was sold to us at the East European Institute after a few challenging years. Our goal is to maintain, by re-launching it, its original spirit: a promoter of free information and independent culture.
This is why we wanted to set up a foreign press corner expert in international politics and a section dedicated to the thirty best-selling books of the month. We also wanted to host publications of poems by allowing the emergence of Italian and foreign authors.
The newsstand also offers a showcase for the artisans of the neighbourhood for their original productions, increasingly qualified as a reference point for the revival of the life of the community of the Rione.

Thus, with the coherence and rigor that characterise it, Emma Bonino wanted to express her enthusiasm for the inauguration of the Edicola Eastwest in front of the Caffè Ruschena in Lungotevere dei Mellini, wearing the clothes of the newsagent. “The Eastwest magazine has taken over this historic aedicule – as explained by Emma Bonino – to encourage discussion and debate on international and European politics, which is a central theme of our country”
CONCIERGE PRATI

EASTWEST Agorà
The added value signed by Eastwest is to make the newsstand not only a distributor of the magazine, books and the most authoritative foreign newspapers, but also a place to meet and read and to ultimately reflect on the world: a real agora , center of debate on international politics.
We then asked the mayor Raggi the permission to clean up and renovate the flowerbeds of the Lungotevere dei Mellini, so as to create sessions that allow us to present books and magazines, organise reading meetings and dialogues on global policies, as the DNA of Eastwest.
In September 2019 we finally (after 15 months from the presentation of the
application, which received enthusiastic comments from all the municipal offices and from the same Mayor …) received the authorisation from the Municipality to create our mini auditorium for international politics. And that we will daily document the works with photos and videos.

Reuben was our guest at the newsstand to talk about global governance and economic growth.
Roberto Vellano
Italian Ambassador in Mozambique and Central Director for the promotion of culture as well as the Italian language, at the Directorate General of the Country System of the Farnesina. Ambassador Vellano, was elected vice-president of Eunic by the General Assembly in June last year in Paris. He was our guest at the newsstand to talk about cooperation regarding the European Union’s external actions.
Annamaria GIORDANO
Anna Maria Giordano was one of the creators of Radio3Mondo in 1999. She is responsible for this and is one of the programme’s hosts. He has worked for EURONEWS, the first multilingual European television channel, dealing with political, economic and cultural information magazines. He has collaborated with SBS Radio, Australian multilingual public service, and with RSI, Italian Swiss Radio. She is co-founder of AUDIODOC, an association of audio documentaries, and MediaAid, a non-profit organization that promotes the use of media in development and international cooperation projects.
